ASPIRIN DOSES
INQUEST VERDICT ON SHEFFIELD MAN
“That he died from asphyxia, due to a large dose of aspirin which he
took to relieve pain and to cause sleep,” was the verdict recorded by the
Sheffield City Coroner (Mr. J. Kenyon Parker) at the resumed inquest yesterday
on Walter Ardron (22), a plasterer in the Sheffield City Architect’s
Department, who was found dead in the rooms he occupied in the Parker’s road,
Sheffield, on 26 November.
It was stated at the inquest on 29 November that Ardron suffered from
head pains and sleeplessness and took drugs, particularly aspirin, to relieve
the pain.
Evidence was also given by a chemist that he had supplied Ardron with
veronal tablets.
Dr. Wordsworth Fawcett said, in his opinion, death was due to poisoning
by aspirin. He had not made any tests for veronal.
The coroner adjourned the inquest in order to find out whether the
white powder found in the man’s stomach was aspirin, veronal or both.
The coroner stated that an analysis of the stomach had been made, and
it confirmed Dr. Fawcett’s report, that in his opinion death was due to aspirin
poisoning. No trace of veronal was found.
[Barbital
(or barbitone), marketed under the brand names Veronal for the pure acid and
Medinal for the sodium salt, was the first commercially available barbiturate.
It was used as a sleeping aid (hypnotic) from 1903 until the mid-1950s. A
barbiturate[a] is a drug that acts as a central nervous system depressant, and
can therefore produce a wide spectrum of effects, from mild sedation to death.]
