reported widely in the press on Saturday 26 September:
ROMANTIC SUICIDE AT LIVERPOOL.
On Saturday the coroner of Liverpool held an inquest on the body
of Lucy Ardron, employed at a temperance hotel, who committed suicide by
drinking carbolic acid. Three weeks since a young gentleman from Edinburgh
stayed at the hotel, and an intimacy sprang up between the parties. About a
week since the gentleman left for Manchester, and a few days previous to her
death deceased told her aunt she had only received one letter from him, which
made her nearly heartbroken. On Thursday night last deceased said to a fellow
servant that what she had on her mind made her wish not to live. The same night
this servant found her suffering from poison, and a bottle of carbolic acid was
by her side. The young woman was conveyed to the hospital, but died on her
arrival there. The jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst suffering from
temporary mental derangement. (The Banffshire Reporter, Saturday, September 26, 1885)
