1963 The Profumo Affair

On Friday 6 November 1964, the Evening Mail and Despatch reported that Louis had been prosecuted for and found guilty of causing an accident by dangerous driving:

Road ban and fine after collision

The driver of a car in which four people were seriously injured when it collided with a second car in Hobbs Moat Road, Sheldon, was fined £10 for dangerous driving at Solihull Magistrate’s Court.

Louis Bingham Ardron (20), of 156, Parkdale Road, Sheldon, was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £2 costs.

He had pleaded not guilty.

During the hearing it was stated that of the injured, two young women were still in Solihull Hospital with serious injuries.

Chief Inspector J. W. Spencer said the case arose from a collision between two cars which had been travelling in opposite directions.

It was alleged that Ardron was travelling in a stream of traffic towards Solihull. He pulled out to overtake, travelled to the offside of the road and collided with the other car.

Chief Inspector Spencer said that in a statement made five days after the accident Ardron suggested that he was travelling behind a high van and pulled out to overtake it.

‘SWUNG OUT’

As he was doing so the van pulled out which caused him “some embarrassment” and forced him across the road.

But the prosecution’s view was that there was no such van which had pulled out in front of the motorist.

In court Ardron who appeared with his left arm in a sling, said he could not remember much about the accident.

He said that there was a van travelling immediately in front of him at the time, the speed of which was slower than his.

He pulled out to view the road ahead, but on seeing something approaching returned to his own side.

Then he pulled out again and seeing the road was clear, started to overtake the van.

He said the front of his car was near the driver’s door of the van when the vehicle suddenly swung out.

He then swerved out himself to avoid a collision with the van. He could recollect nothing more until he woke up in hospital.
