NOTE – John had difficulty in filling out the form as he has
also included the details of his two deceased children (which were then crossed
out). It is likely that the return was filled out prior to the actual Census
night as his brother Herbert is shown, but the 1911 Census also shows him as
resident with his own family at 6 Old Sheffield Road,
Rotherham. Therefore he was counted twice!
1938 December It was announced

rationing and more.
1939 On
September 3 Prime Minister Chamberlain went to the airwaves to announce to the
British people that a state of war existed between their country and Germany.

RAWMARSH CHILD’S SINGULAR DEATH.
On Saturday Alec. Ardron, aged 2, son of John Ardron, coal miner, of 8, Pottery
Street, Rawmarsh, died under singular circumstances. The child was seated at
the breakfast table, and apparently all right, when the mother was called to
attend to domestic duties in another room. On her return two minutes later she
found the baby lying on the hearth-rug with the blade of an old pocket-knife
sticking in his head to the depth of half an inch. The injuries proved fatal
later in the day.
Yesterday afternoon Mr. Kenyon-Parker, deputy coroner, held an inquest at the
Earl Grey Inn, Rawmarsh, and the jury returned a verdict to the effect that the
child “Fell accidentally and cut his head with a knife, and died from the
